My very first ALIFE conference experience was back in 1996 (ALIFE V) in Nara, Japan, but the first *international* ALIFE conf. experience was in 1998 (ALIFE VI) in LA, USA. That was my very first time traveling to the USA! Back then, the registration was done by sending a fax (!), the travel grant application was still done by sending surface mail (!!), and the oral presentations were still using the overhead projector (!!!). Actually, I made a shared Google Photos album with every photo I've ever taken at every ALIFE conference I've been to! https://photos.app.goo.gl/ss3s3uKXjrixVPhd9 There are photos and videos of people who may or may not be okay with having their photos shared, so it's good to check with the individuals there first. I have many many amazing, beautiful memories at ALIFE. It is my favorite conference to attend and I always choose going to ALIFE over any other conference.

ECAL 2009 was my first (and only) conference in the field of artificial intelligence. Back then it also was one of the first meetings I visited abroad. For me personally, this conference was very lively and intriguing and it stood at the beginning of my academic journey. So it has a very special place in my heart. Nowadays I am working in a more classical field (medical statistics and clinical research), but ECAL and Alife demonstrated early in my career that science can be unconventional and diverse in its approaches, but sound and bringing evidence on very different levels and scales. This likey still influences my approaches in my current field of research. Its a great achievement that the conference series and the field sustained for 40 years.

Hiroki Sayama: Just found some photos from ALIFE VI (in LA, USA). I presented a live demo of SDSR loop (a precursory model before the evoloops). Some scenes from the conference venue are also included. The conference was much smaller than what it is now.
